A Knock Out mini campaign was fought over the weekend; well that was the plan. In fact it's not finished yet, but more of that later. The system was based on IanH's version for DBA (HERE). I used four protagonists, assuming that would speed up matters. My version of the Campaign Rules is below the initial map; battles were resolved using the Portable Wargame, though for a really quick version DotS might be used.

SKOMC Rules (click to make legible) |
To make the terrain and Orders of Battle fairly random I used some pre-made terrain boards (see Rules) and a random Unit table a la Neil Thomas (this was designed on the units I had available).
On to the games.
Year 1
In Year 1, Pseudo-Klasica attacked Mythica.

Misty Mythica |
Terrain rolled up was Board 2, rotated so that East became North; this gave the defenders the advantage of a hill to perch on from the start. The Pseudo-Klasicans arrived with 4 Infantry units and two Cavalry; the Mythicans, 3 Infantry and 3 Cavalry, so neither side fielded archers. All Infantry and Cavalry were heavies.
The battle began with cavalry fighting in the centre
Both sides reached Exhaustion Point (30% hits) on the same move; units in close combat fought on until Rout Point (50% hits). The attackers reached Rout Point first and the battle was over. Pseudo-Klasica had failed in their attack and their Aggression rate went down to -1.
Year 2
Despite losing an Aggression point in Year 1, Pseudo-Klasica was Attacker again in Year 2.
The designated Defender for this game was Mooritanian.

Full of Eastern Promise (ok Southern, but you get the idea) |
Terrain for this battle was board number 3. The Pseudo-Klasicans fielded 3 Infantry, 2 Archers and 1 Cavalry; Mooritania, 4 Infantry and 2 Archers.

So, with a successful attack Pseudo-Klasica has captured a territory and regained an Aggression Point. More to follow...
Nice little games ⚔️⚔️
ReplyDeleteIt’s good to see those 10mm Irregular Miniatures performing sterling service.
FWIW Pendraken have just released some 10mm Goths which are amazing figures 😉
Cheers,
Geoff
Thanks Geoff. I really like Pendraken figures, but (there's always a but) I generally don't want such large numbers eg 30 Infantry. Last time I bought from Irregular they'd still sell you 1 figure if 1 was what you wanted! I'm sounding like my age here, but it's just such a waste to buy 30 if you just want 4 (or whatever)!!
DeleteAgreed, those Goths are VERY nice!
DeletePendraken generally sell in packs, but they will sell figures individually (albeit they cost slightly more than via the pack deal). Same as you I don’t wanna have lots of “left over” figures, so generally just order whatever individual figures I want - a necessity when most of my games only have a relatively small number of figures per side.

Thanks for the info. Good to know!
DeleteAn inspiring idea for a short campaign. I would like to do something similar, but with ImagiNations Horse & Musket armies. Saw photos of the Pendraken Goths online today and cannot but agree with Elliesdad! Best wishes, Arthur
ReplyDeleteThanks Arthur. I think this system would work equally well with H&M period armies. I'll go have a look at those Goths...
DeleteA good start to the campaign, A great example of doing alot with a little. (Pun intended).
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark - these little guys have been involved in a lot of battles... I hope to get the next two games reported soon!
DeleteGreat to see another campaign under way! 👍🏼. I always enjoy reading these.
ReplyDeleteThe ‘six rotatable battlefields’ is a superb idea, giving plenty of variety without too much messing about. Absolutely brilliant, and in danger of being shamelessly copied at Smiff Towers, I think. 😁.
Also there are some new terrain items on display here, perhaps? Are they recent acquisitions?
Thanks Martin. The wooden "buildings" are from a little set my son brought back from a trip to Italy some years ago. They represent some tourist locations and have been sitting in the toy box waiting for a photo opportunity. The standing stones in the Mythica pic are from my 6mm terrain box - I spent some time making set pieces for a 6mm project that never really got off the ground. Perhaps I should dig out the bits and see.....
