Below are a few of the things I've been fiddling around with between game reports - hopefully something may be of interest...
First off, I found a couple of buildings to make on Hugh Walter's Small Scale World blog (here) that are quite fun and would look nice for a 20th Century game or Railway layout (if made better then I managed of course); Matchbox cars for scale.
I tried an Inter War period Portable Wargame using block units made from MDF bases with images from the Junior General site stuck on to them which worked ok and seemed a good way of testing out a period for which I didn't have two completed forces - not everyone's cup of tea but really no different from playing a Boardgame (and its a very cheap option!)
Many years ago I created a game called Giant! - I've since lost the rules (that were on the back of an envelope) however I found some of the figures (6mm from Irregular and Bacchus) and scenery (6mm buildings from Irregular) which are quite fun. The stand-in Giant is a Prehistoric Man in 28mm.
At the time I'd started making a couple of Fantasy game armies in 6mm (my eyesight was better then....)

Talking of Giants, here are a pair from many years ago - both are still available (Hinchliffe from Broadsword Miniatures, and MiniFigs from Caliver Books)
On the Left Hinchliffe Giant from 1980. On the Right MiniFigs Giant 1973
Next post will hopefully be a game report...
A variety of projects on the go there…👍🏼. The interwar game looks like a very good way to sample an era.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite happy playing wargames with blocks, though it's not as photogenic as figures
DeleteI really like the Grafar re-prints and the period for your Portable Wargame. I guess the reprints are supposed to be to N-scale, but your Matchbox cars are closer to OO i think? The Garage looks more appropriate for OO than N. I also like your Junior General top-downs. Sticking them to pieces of mdf also makes them very durable and friendly for handling during wargames. Paper miniatures from Junior General s a very good way to try out new games and rules quickly. The miniatures comes ready painted. I've used them a couple of times my self and consider using them for a future Star Wars game too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Roger. Yes I believe the buildings are N scale, though as you say the Garage, certainly the Petrol Pumps, look to be OO. I follow the Charles Grant suggestion and use buildings that are to a smaller scale for wargaming to reduce their footprint.
DeleteI'm really not good at painting which makes me very slow at it! I have come to appreciate resources like Junior General for gaming.
Interwar is a fascinating period. I do like the idea of the giant game. The Mythical Earth giant is one of my favourite figures of all time. I was charmed by him when he first arrived on the wargaming scene long ago. I think he radiates charm and whimsy in a very Pauline Baynes way. The patched trousers add to this vibe for me.

ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of Inter-War Imaginations. Are you going to revive yours for some garden wars?
The MiniFigs Giant was a friendly looking one, out of a story book - I know what you mean about Pauline Baynes; I really liked her cover art for The Hobbit. The ME range was very whimsical.
