No Picnic at La Roche

Setting

A fast, bloody game based on Scenario 29 (Shambolic Command) of Neil Thomas's One Hour Wargames.
Army Black have been ordered to hold the strategically important hill known as La Roche at all costs. Army Red are charged with taking the same hill. Due to the ineptitude of the author the Black commander, his forces can only activate two units per turn (either moving or firing). Army Red has 4 units, Army Black has 6; the units were randomly rolled for on the tables in OHW. Only Infantry and Cavalry were to be involved.

Army Black's opening position

Game

Army Red arrives and moves up to engage the enemy

Black moves his cavalry to defend the rear

A Cavalry battle ensues...

while the Infantry stand and take casualties

Army Red continue to whittle away at Black's Line Infantry

Black's Hussars are dispatched to tackle Red's flank

Black's Infantry are decimated

The Naval Infantry face Red's Dragoons

while Black's Hussars charge (and destroy) the remaining Guards

Red's forces establish a cross fire but Black's Hussars are still active

Black's last charge

Army Red have captured the Hill (just)

    1. Thanks Nobby. The OHW book got me back into Wargaming after quite a few years; its simplicity and speed of play suit my lack of time and space.

    2. There are some interesting ways to simplify the 15 hits recording on the internet.

    3. Currently I'm using a pencil and the back of envelopes though I've seen that some are using dice to keep score.

    1. Cheers mate! Worth picking up a copy just for the scenario which are good inspiration - there's some cheap copies on Amazon

  3. A very Morschauser looking game. What make of figures are they?

    1. They are all from Irregular Miniatures Peter - I was looking for a Toy Soldier type figure in a smallish scale (these are 28mm) and Ian at Irregular pointed me at these.

  4. Tricky scenario. The figures and board work well!

    1. Thanks Ross. I haven't played many games with limited activation - makes things more interesting for sure!

  6. I don't often see this scenario being played, so I have a question.

The defenders can only activate two units per turn. Did you restrict this activation to just moving/charging, with all units still being allowed to shoot, or was it strictly applied with only two defending units being able to do *anything* during the turn? Like many things in the realms of Neil Thomas, it's not clear how it's supposed to be applied.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Kaptain. If I remember correctly I allowed any units attacked to melee but could only move/fire the two that could be activated. Hope that helps.
