Three

For the third post of the year I fought a Mini Campaign using 3x3 Fast Play Portable Wargame rules again. I was quite expecting it to go to three games, but as it seemed drawn at two I stopped there, leaving things open for a re-match.

The Map

The Empire, tired of raiding parties playing havoc with the economy, have sent a force across the wide river to give the local tribe a bloody nose. As this involves quite a lot of logistics, the barbarians have had time to get a force of their own together and marched to meet the enemy.

The First Battle

The two armies arriving

The Barbarians take the initiative

Evenly balanced

The Empire begin to push back

but run out of resources and must fall back instead

The second battle

A reinforced Barbarian Army chases the Empire force to the nearest town where they also gain additional numbers.

The confident Barbarians attack

but are repulsed

and now the Empire is on the offensive

The Barbarians are driven off with few crossing the river at the end of the day

  1. This sounds a bit like “big boy pushes little boy, then little boy pushes back”, then lots of posturing. As you suggested, a re-match when one of them feels the time is right (or their opponents are also distracted elsewhere). I look forward to reading how it goes…

    1. Thanks Geoff - The "Empire" always seem to do well on their own turf, which begs the question, how did they manage to build an Empire?

  2. A very nice campaign report. Perhaps the Empire managed to achieve its prominence by a series of clever marriages earlier in its history rather than by outright conquest. As a result, the leadership isn’t interested in further expansion by conquest but will defend its territory with all the resources it can muster.

    All the best,

    Bob

  3. Thanks for the batreps. A new theatre of ops? Or have you visited these nations and their clashes before?

  4. A very nice campaign report. There could be room for more, perhaps a barbarian chieftain seeking loot for his followers raids the Empire, or a new imperial governor seeking glory takes the helm..

    1. Cheers Mark. I think there's unfinished business as far as the Empire is concerned and there could well be another go in the Spring..
